Why Organic?

Why Organic cotton?

That's simple, it's health. Your health, health of your children, communities and the environment. Baby's skin is more porous and thinner than adults! That means that their skin absorbs things very easily. It's less resistant to bacteria and harmful substances in the environment, especially if it's irritated. Babies sweat less efficiently than the rest of us, so it's harder for them to maintain their inner body temperature. This means that children are at greater risk for pesticide-related health problems than adults. Manual farming and organic practices have a lower carbon footprint as the entire process consumes less fuel and energy and emits fewer greenhouse gases.

Organic clothing uses cotton that is not farmed in the conventional ways. It is grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, chemical fertilizers or any other chemicals, other safer methods are used to produce the crops. Therefore workers have better working conditions, water quality is not compromised by run-off, and strong healthy soil is built. The end product is a cotton fabric that is toxin free.

Organic cotton is safer, sturdier, and cheaper and it feels great!

Conventionally produced cotton material lasts 10-20 washes before it starts to break down. An organic cotton material lasts for 100 washes or more before it begins to wear down. This is because the cotton fibers in conventionally produced cotton take so much abuse in production because it goes through scouring, bleaching, dying, softeners, formaldehyde spray, and flame and soil retardants before it is even shipped to be cut for patterns.

Organic fabrics are hypoallergenic and absorbs moisture from our bodies in a more efficient way than non organic materials.

Creating a pure, natural environment is a vital decision for a growing number of parents. With our children exposed to pollutants in many aspects of life, choosing organic fibers is another step towards natural and safe living.

Why Are Some Products Made In China?

We get this questions often and therefore I thought it may be a good idea to give everyone the answers they need right here on our blog.

We at Summer For Kids make sure that our manufacturers visit their China factory many times and are satisfied that the conditions under which the workers labor are similar to those of workers in such factories in the U.S.
We have found that everyone would certainly prefer to produce products in the U.S. however the price point would be so much higher that the products would not be available to the average parents in our country.

At Summer For Kids we pick manufacturers who make their products in USA, Europe, and China. For those items made in China we always ask if and how often they visit their factories and if they are fair trade companies. We also ask what products they use and if those products and how they are tested.

Some examples: the bamboo clothing by Dreamsacks are made in China. Dreamsacks visits the factories twice a year and have developed a relationship with their factories and workers. Dreamsacks vision is to provide nurturing natural products while consciously caring for people and the environment. They let the moms bring their babies to work to support breastfeeding and relationship between mom and a child.

Another example from the Summer For Kids store, Babysoy.
A comfy and affordable layettes line made by artisans who are fairly-treated in a safe working environment. Co-founders personally conduct unannounced factory inspections at least 4 times a year.

Our manufacturers say that reasons why their products are made in China:
1. The cost involved in making their products in the USA is extremely expensive.
2. Formed a level of trust with the Asian factories they have worked with. Good quality work.
3. These companies have been very successful with the factories as well.
4. Almost all organic cotton is grown in Asia or Egypt. If it’s grown in Egypt, why can’t it be grown in China?? People are people and being Chinese doesn’t make them any lesser people than Egyptians.
5. People listen to too much of what the media says about China. Not all of China is bad. It’s about what the products are made of not if they are made in China or not.

You are supporting American people, American companies whose products are made in China. These companies are run by American people and employ American people in USA.

Parents who want to find information about which products are made in China, or how companies ensure those products are safe, can take initiative to get the information.

The Ultimate Safety Guide for Body Care Products

SAFETY GUIDE ON BODY CARE PRODUCTS

We'd like to believe that the government is policing the safety of all products we're putting on our bodies and our children’s bodies especially, but they are not!
Children’s immature metabolism and organ systems are typically less capable of fending off chemical assaults. Subtle damage to developing bodies that does not trigger immediate health effects may lead to disease later in life.

Choose better body care products!

Labels might claim that a product is "gentle" or "natural," but with no required safety testing, companies that make personal care products can use almost any chemical they want, regardless of risks. So, always read product labels - especially the ingredient list - before you buy!

How to choose better body care products

1. Always Avoid
Words ending in “paraben”
(Parabens, commonly used as preservatives in body care products, disrupt normal hormone function and have been linked with breast cancer)
BHA ( causes skin depigmentation)
2-BROMO-2-NITROPROPANE-1,3-DIOL or BRONOPOL (alergen that forms cancer – causing chemicals) in: baby wipes
Boric acid and sodium borate ( unsafe for infants according to industry experts)
DMDM Hydantoin (alergen that forms cancer-causing chemicals) in :– liquid soap, sunscreen, conditioner, lotion, baby wipes
Dibutyl Phthalate & Toluene ( found in nail polish, hormone disruption )
Imidsazolidinyl urea
Methylchloroisothiazolinone

Methylisothiazolinone
active ingredient in antimicrobial soaps and personal care products causes nerve damage. The ingredient is called MIT (methylisothiazolinone), and it is found in antimicrobial soaps, hand soaps, dish soaps and a surprising number of personal care products. Naturalnews.com
Oxybenzone ( allergen. Damages cells and DNA with free radicals) in: sunscreen
Triclosan (Triclosan soaps are no more effective at preventing disease than regular soaps. Triclosan inhibits sex hormone activity)
Triclocarban
Triethanolamine (or “TEA”)
( allergen that forms cancer-causing chemicals) in : sunscreen

2. Check the beginning of the ingredients list
These are the soap, surfactant, or lubricant that has been added to make the product work.
Try to avoid ingredients that start with “PEG” or have an “-eth” in the middle (e.g., sodium laureth sulfate).
 in :shampoo, conditioner

3. Read the middle ingredients

some common – but not essential - additives that may bring excess hazard are : fragrance and dyes. On the label look for “FRAGRANCE,” “FD&C,” or “D&C.”
( allergens, neurotoxic, hormone disruption concerns)

Use fewer products and use them less often.
Don’t trust the claims. Check ingredients.
Buy fragrance-free products.
Avoid the use of baby powder on newborns and infants.

Hollow Woodworks- simply the best

One day Jim began building a deck he designed for the back of his house. In the middle of his deck building project, Jim needed to take a trip to the hardware store. After gathering the supplies he needed, Jim made his way to the check-out. While waiting in line, he found a “How to Make a USA Puzzle” catalog and just had to buy it, not knowing that this would mark the beginning of his woodworking journey. That was twenty-five years ago.

For fun, Jim began making puzzles and name stools for his family and friends. Soon enough he was doing local art and craft shows where his custom woodworking skills and products really became popular. Hollow Woodworks was born. While I was talking to Jim this afternoon, he said something that really caught my attention. “I have so much fun doing what I love. It really is the best job in the world,” says Jim.

In an effort to support our country and people here in the USA, all of the Hollow Woodworks supplies are from the USA. Hollow Woodworks uses primarily sustainable maple wood and occasionally sustainable birch wood. The paint used on all the Hollow Woodworks pieces is made right outside of Detroit and is water based acrylic paint safe for kids and safe for the environment.
Not only does Jim love his company and his job but he also believes that Hollow Woodworks is truly the best. There are a few things that make Hollow Woodworks truly special.
First, whatever the customer wants, Hollow Woodworks can make it. They are always striving to have new products and ideas and they love customer input. Second, Hollow Woodworks products are of the highest quality all the way down to the nails used to hold the pieces together. Everything is made in the USA! “Quality lasts a lot longer, even if it means paying a little bit more. You’re paying for the quality of the craftsmanship.” Jim says. And this is true. Hollow Woodworks even replaces lost pieces for free!

Hollow Woodworks is best known for their super awesome Name Stools! Personally, the name stool is my favorite item Hollow Woodworks offers. Each stool has a puzzle of the child’s name cut out on it. The best part is that it is a puzzle! This is great for little ones to begin recognizing the letters in their own name and even basic colors too. Hollow Woodworks offers many more items other than the name stool such as toy boxes, flip step stools, a variety of educational puzzles to name rocking chairs, all which are available to purchase at the Summer For Kids store. So if you are looking for a fun, cool, personal great quality gift your child will appreciate forever, I recommend any of the Hollow Woodworks products.

Custom Name Stools starting at $59.00

All Hollow Woodworks items are made with love in Ferguson, Missouri.

Safe Nursery

Creating a SAFE nursery for your baby

There are so many items you have to focus on but today I will focus on following:

Furniture, mattresses, paints, rugs.

* CRIB SAFETY

CPSC ( consumer products safety commission ) would like to remind parents not to use any crib with missing, broken, or loose parts. Make sure to tighten hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. Stay away from drop-side crib!.

The danger with dropdown cribs is that there are often parts that are broken, missing, or misassembled. For instance, the crib's drop-side could come off its tracks and create a "hazardous gap which can lead to infant entrapment and suffocation."

It is not the first time cribs have been recalled due to dropdown side dangers. Nearly 5 million cribs have been recalled over the past two years and the CPSC has discussed banning dropdown sides all together.

Do Not purchase an antique or used crib or bassinet. It may be missing hardware that prevents it from collapsing or failing in some other way. Some older cribs have cutouts in the headboard or footboard....read more:http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/babies-kids/resource-center/guide-to-childproofing-and-safety/crib-safety-tips/crib-safety-tips.htm

* Prioritize Natural materials (solid wood, certified organic cotton, wool, etc).

There are numerous examples of how natural materials perform better than synthetic materials and without the added chemical concerns. Wool, for one, can absorb 30% of its own weight in moisture (keeping your baby dryer), is excellent at fighting mildew and deterring dust mites and is inherently flame retardant.

Try to choose natural fibers over man made ones like nylon when you are buying rug. For a rug, a natural fiber could mean cotton, wool, jute, hemp, sisal, and more. When buying either, make sure you watch for glue used on the rug.

if you’re buying a skid pad for under the new rug, choose natural rubber over PVC. And don’t forget to take off your shoes before you enter the home, you don’t want to be tracking in outdoor gunk including pesticide residue :)

* Brominated flame retardants (BFRs):

Look for mattresses that are free of these chemicals. You don’t want or need them around your kids (more information on BFRs from the US EPAcan be found here). Vinyl (PVC), the worst of the worst plastics, is also used a lot. Look for mattresses that have eliminated BFRs & PVC.

* Buy Certified Organic

Conventional cotton remains the most polluting crop in the world (because of the large amounts of pesticides and herbicides used in growing), so organic is the best way to go. But the term is used loosely and some mattresses are marketed as organic yet still contain vinyl and nasty chemicals like brominated flame retardants (BFRs).

* VOC

is Volatile organic compound that has high enough vapor pressures under normal conditions to significantly vaporize and enter the atmosphere. Conventional paints are made from petrochemical-based solvents, which off-gas toxic indoor air pollutants called (VOC). VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. Check with the manufacturer to make sure they use low or no VOC paint and formaldehyde free glue.

Focus on Water-based paints, stains & glues on furniture.

Very sad fact: “Under Proposition 65, California has determined that exposure to formaldehyde at 40 micrograms per day (equivalent to an indoor concentration of about 2 ppb) results in a 1 in 100,000 lifetime risk of cancer. Individually, the Child Craft Oak Crib, the Bridget 4-in-1 Crib, the Kayla II Changing Table, the Berkley Changing Table, the Country Style Changing Table, and the Rochester Cognac Crib each contain enough formaldehyde to contaminate an entire home with levels of formaldehyde greater than this threshold.”

Click here to read more about formaldehyde in children’s furniture here

Don’t use second hand or antique furniture for your child since they may contain high levels of VOC and formaldehyde glues.

Use sustainable wood and hardwood if possible.

If a company is using some sort of particleboard, you need to make sure it's formaldehyde free. And what does sustainable wood mean? It means trees should not be cut down faster than what is necessary to keep the earth safe and habitable for humans. ( bamboo, asian hardwood, maple, mango, cane,..) (Medium growth rate trees such as red oak, birch and red-bud have medium growth rates and should be okay when purchased from sustainable resources.)

As I always say DO NOT safe money on your child safety and well being. There are products out-there that are SAFE and Reasonably Priced, just do your research.

If you have any questions even about products that Summer For Kids doesn’t carry please do not hesitate to email us.

Summer For Kids is here with children’s safety in mind.

Mattress Buying Tips

Are you ready to buy a crib mattress?

Here are some buying tips ....

When you're shopping for a crib, you'll also need to choose a mattress. Don't underestimate this purchase; a mattress is as important as the crib. After all, your baby will spend a lot of time snoozing--up to 18 hours a day initially--so it's essential to select the best.

Check for firmness. Buy a firm mattress. Don't worry that it may feel too firm. Press on the mattress in the center and at the edges. It should snap back readily and should not conform to the shape of your hand. If a mattress is too soft, it can conform to your baby's shape, causing a risk of suffocation or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Test the fit. By law, all full-size crib mattresses must be at least 27 1/4 inches by 51 5/8 inches and no more than six inches thick. If you can squeeze more than two fingers between the mattress and the crib, the mattress is too small and it can leave gaps in the crib that could trap and endanger your baby.

Don't worry about warranties. Some mattresses offer a one-year, a seven-year, or even a lifetime warranty. Don't be swayed by a long warranty, and don't pay extra for a mattress with a warranty. In general, you can expect any quality crib mattress to last as long as you're going to use it, provided that the cover hasn't become ripped or torn and that it's been used properly.

Organic. Non-organic mattresses have chemicals that can create allergen problems and issues with immunity development and reproductive systems. These mattresses are also covered in secondary chemicals to decrease their flammability. These chemicals have been linked to the increase in hyperactivity and neurobehavioral alterations in children. Babies spend hours sleeping in their beds and breathing in these poisons.

The baby’s bed should be a safe place. The use of organic cotton and wool work to decrease dust mites, contain a resistance to bacteria and are more flame retardant.

A mattress wrapped in wool complies with the Federal fire retardant rules/regulations. Wool is a sustainable raw material (sheep only get a haircut), not harmful to the environment, and is actually healthy for the body. Furthermore, wool is naturally dust mite free, resists molds, and is naturally hypo-allergenic.

The Great WOOL

True wool allergy is quite rare.

Holy Lamb Nursing Pillow

Many people with chemical sensitivities have found relief with wool. Many wool sensitivities arise from the harsh chemical processing agents that whiten, clean, remove oils and add color to the wool. Many who previously believed that they were allergic to wool have found that our wool products do not irritate them at all.

Dust-mite allergies and asthma

Wool bedding, mattresses, changing tables are ideal for everyone and especially those with asthma and dust-mite allergies. Dust-mites are a common bedroom allergen and cause respiratory irritation for many people. Wool bedding will not support the growth of dust-mites like other bedding will. Wool fibers inhibit mold, mildew or bacterial growth — all of which are common bedroom allergens.

Benefits of Wool:

o Wool resists dust - mites.

o Wool resists bacteria.

o Wool is fire resistant.

o Wool is cool in the summer yet warm in the winter ~ it is a breathable material.

o Unlike down bedding which shifts over time (ie. bare spots in a comforter), wool stays in place.

o With proper care your woolen bedding can last for decades.

o Unlike bedding that uses plucked down feathers, a sheep grows a coat of wool annually and is not harmed during sheering.

o Wool is a sustainable product helping small farmers make a living.

Wool Batting: Our comforters and pillows use pure and natural wool batting. Wool comes from sheep. They grow a coat of wool each year, which is sheered (like a haircut) in the spring. Our wool comes from a local woolen mill in the Pacific Northwest where the long fibers are carded using old turn of the century machines. We are proud to support American sheep farmers.

Toy Drive 2010

THANK YOU

for ALL your toy donations!

We had our annual Toy Drive hosted at the Summer For Kids Store on Saturday January 16th to collect new and used toys for children who are less fortunate in the Santa Barbara community.

The purpose of this toy drive was to remind children of the Santa Barbara community the principle of giving without receiving. For most children the holiday season means that new toys are on the way. After the holiday season the new toys are put to use while the old ones are left unused. Summer For Kids’ intentions for this toy drive was to encourage children to participate and donate their old toys to children in need. These children then should receive a good feeling in their heart for donating their toys to children who are less fortunate.
The children who donated toys were able to participate in painting, coloring and playdough acivities & the entire Summer For Kids Store was 10% OFF.

*Thank you Clementine Art for the soy crayon & playdough donations!*

It was so much fun to see kids and parents come and donate their toys! All the toys donated this weekend will make such difference in other kiddos lives all around Santa Barbara!

The kids thoroughly enjoyed finger painting and the art they created will be hanging in the SFK store window this week for the community to view :)

Also we would like to remind the community that there is a toy drive every day at SFK and we are happy to take toy and clothing donations any day of the week because there are always families who need these items.

THANK YOU!

Why Summer For Kids Chooses Natural, Wooden and Organic Toys?

I’d like to share why we choose to sell natural and smart toys and products, and not battery-operated or plastic toys at Summer For Kids

Children's Imagination

* Toys without batteries invite open-ended play - the type of play that fosters creativity and keeps the child interested in the toy for many years.

* Open-ended toys inspire a child to imagine the countless possibilities for that toy, and all the while the child is focusing on just that toy. Their thoughts are not jumping from one toy to the next as often occurs when the toys think for the child.

* Natural toys allow for 'downtime'. It is difficult for a child to switch gears from a very active toy to resting, whereas simple toys allow for a natural progression to rejuvenating activities such as reading books, daydreaming, or napping.

Children's Mental Health

* Toys with battery-generated special effects can over-stimulate children. The combination of blinking lights, loud sounds or music, and automated movement can be too much information for a small child to process

* The environment is completely different in a room with natural toys than in a room with battery-operated plastic toys

* Adults and children are drawn to nature and to products created from natural materials.

Children's Physical Health

* Studies have shown that certain plastics may negatively affect health. Our customers know that Summer For Kids doesn’t carry any products made with PVC, BPA and PHTHALATES . CHECnet.org states that, "phthalates are added to PVC (polyvinyl chloride) to make it soft and flexible. Phthalates have been linked to cancer, kidney and liver damage, harm to developing reproductive organs, and premature breast development in baby girls. Inhaling these chemicals can also worsen asthma in children. Phthalates are not bonded to the plastic, but can migrate, or leach out."

* Pesticides and fertilizers are used on conventionally grown (non-organic) cotton, and chemicals are often used in the production process. These harmful chemicals not only impact those who buy conventionally-grown cotton, but those within miles of where they are used, as they drift in the wind, fall back to the ground in rain and snow, and leach into groundwater.

* Due to children's small size and their propensity to "mouth" or cuddle everything, plastic and non-organic products, with the risks shown above, could pose serious health threats to children.

Environmental Health

* Wooden, bamboo toys and toys made out of recycled materials are durable so they last longer than their plastic counterparts and therefore there is less waste. When the time does come to retire your toys, wood and bamboo are recyclable, replenish able resources so you can rest assured that their disposal will be gentle to our Earth.

* Children are drawn to natural toys and have more respect for them so they tend to care for them better than other toys. This also leads to less waste.

* Bamboo is a giant natural grass that can grow to over 100 feet. Once cut, bamboo grows back completely in only three years. Thus, bamboo has economical and ecological values to the world, particularly as it is used instead of certain woods.

* The chemicals used in non-organic cotton farming harm not only the land, but also flora and fauna for miles around.

Here are some of the Manufactures we carry

Sprig Toys, Green Toys, Plan Toys, Lauri Toys, Beka, Maple Landmark

Idbids, Automoblox, Blunders, Uncle Goose Blocks
